Rolling herbal cigarettes is a therapeutic art form that requires patience, practice and attention. My study of Herbalism began with herbal cigarettes and smoke blends when my now fiancé Mario came across some information on Damiana, an herb well known for its smoke-ability. He asked me to take a trip with him to a local apothecary, without hesitation, I said “Sure!”. As soon as we stepped foot into the shop I was smitten and wanted to know everything about the place. Shortly after our initial visit, I began an internship at the herb shop and started my journey as an herbalist. Years later, I worked for a small, local herbal cigarette company and really began to hone my craft as a roller. Needless to say, herbal cigarettes and smoke blends hold a very special place in my heart and are still one of my favorite ways to unwind.
Roll Your Own
These cigarettes can be created using a roller or by hand. There is a bit of a learning curve when rolling your own cigarettes but don't let that discourage you from learning the art form!
Supplies Needed
Smokable herbs (suggestions here)
Rolling papers
Paper crutches/filters (optional)
Cigarettes roller (optional)
Filtered water or flower essence
1 Small bowl
1 Small measuring up
On a flat surface, set up your rolling station. Add about 1 cup of smoking herbs to the bowl and about 1 tablespoon of filtered water or flower essence to a measuring cup. Peel a crutch from its booklet, holding it between your index finger and thumb, roll one of the short ends upward toward the center of the crutch to form a small curve. Roll in a spiral motion to form cylinder, pinch the rolled crutch between your index finger and thumb to maintain its shape.
Open the cigarette roller, place the crutch into the cradle of the roller and push it against the left or right side, holding it in place with one finger. With the other hand, gently and evenly fill the roller with a few pinches of smoking herbs, keeping the area of the crutch free from herbs. Close the roller, insert a rolling paper, gum/shinny side toward you, into the crease of the roller.
With your fingers, turn the rollers toward you to feed the paper into the crease and round the herbs. Just before the shinny seal enters the roller, slightly wet a finger, run it across the seal, roll 3-4 times and pull the rollers apart to gather your cigarette.
Store the cigarettes in an airtight container to help maintain freshness. I like to use these glass cylinders that can be closed with a cork. Enjoy your herbal smokes!
